Thursday 28 January 2010

I'm pleased to say that after my lazy time over Christmas I've got back into the routine of running in the mornings.

9km this morning through Bottisham and Lode and back passed the mill along the old railway track (which is consierably less muddy than along the riverbank). A time of 54 minutes was not quick but OK for early in the morning, before breakfast.

Very quiet in respect of birds, in fact virtually nothing until Station Road in Quy. Here there were some Jackdaws, Blackbirds and a Kestrel.

Tuesday 26 January 2010

I started out as early as I could (6.55) but it was still fairly dark. I chose a route going out that was safe enough to run. This morning's run took me into Bottisham then along to Lode. I ran right through Lode and 3/4 of a mile the other side into the fen along Bottisham Lode. I then turned back to Lode and went passed Lode Mill and back along Quy Water. Total distance was 11.8km (time 69.5 minutes). The footpath along the river on the way back was very muddy and this sapped was little energy was left in my legs!

A Long-Eared Owl flew across the Newmarket Road just in front of me. Along Bottisham Lode there were 4 Moorhens, a lot of Fieldfares, a Reed Bunting and a Kestrel. Quy Water had 2 Mute Swans a couple of Mallards and in the field next to Anglesey Abbey (which was water-logged) there were about 30 Black-Headed Gulls and a similar number of Rooks.

A 4.3 mile run via Lode and Bottisham. I ran with Joanna as far as Anglesey Abbey, along the main road (it's a great shame that there is no cycle path from Quy to Anglesey Abbey - I'm surprised the National Trust haven't done anything about it). I then picked up the pace and continued the rest of the way ahead of her.

There was a small group of 3 Red-Legged Partridges just before the Newmarket Road.

A short run of just under 2 miles around the village tonight after work. Running-in my new shoes.

Sunday 10 January 2010

Still some snow on the ground, but the paths and roads are not icy. Therefore set out on a gentle run to Lode Mill with Joanna. A Buzzard flew across the road in front of us in Station Road, Quy. At the Mill I decided to push on alone along my 10k route.

On the way back I decided to extend the run by heading for Quy Fen rather than following the old railway line, to take advantage of the lack of mud. This extended the run to just over 10.6k. http://gb.mapometer.com/en/running/route_333017.html

2 Herons seen (Quy Waters and Bottisham Lode) also a Little Grebe in Bottisham Lode. A female Bullfinch was seen near Quy Fen.

Sunday 3 January 2010

A long break due to snow and ice and Christmas. Started the New Year with a gentle 10k run in Thetford Forest. The weather was cold and it was snowing quite heavily for the final 4km.
